A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the Mindanao region in southern Philippines, causing significant damage and a heavy human toll. The earthquake’s epicenter was located off the coast of Sarangani Province and was felt across much of Mindanao as well as in several neighboring Southeast Asian countries.
According to Philippine disaster management authorities, at least 35 people were killed and more than 130 others were injured. Several victims were trapped under collapsed buildings, while others were affected by landslides triggered by the strong shaking. Search and rescue operations remain underway in the hardest-hit areas, raising concerns that the death toll could rise further.
The earthquake struck early in the morning as many residents were heading to work or school. Scenes of panic were reported in several cities, including General Santos, where commercial buildings suffered partial collapses. Power outages, communication disruptions, and damage to roads and other critical infrastructure were also reported across multiple provinces in Mindanao.
Authorities quickly issued tsunami warnings for coastal areas of the Philippines, as well as parts of Indonesia and Malaysia. Small tsunami waves were observed in several locations across the western Pacific, but the warnings were lifted a few hours later after assessments indicated that the threat had diminished.
More than 200 aftershocks have been recorded since the main earthquake, with some exceeding magnitude 6. Seismologists warned that additional aftershocks could further damage already weakened structures. Residents have been advised to avoid unsafe buildings and follow instructions from local authorities.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered the immediate deployment of emergency response teams, military personnel, and rescue workers to affected areas. Evacuation centers have been opened to accommodate displaced residents while authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage and humanitarian needs.
