Searches are currently being carried out as part of a new investigation into suspected financial misappropriation involving the National Rally (Rassemblement national – RN) and several of its European allies. The case concerns the former Identity and Democracy (ID) political group at the European Parliament, which included the RN during the 2019–2024 parliamentary term.
According to information reported by Le Monde, investigators are examining the alleged misuse of several million euros in European funds allocated to support the activities of the parliamentary group. A financial review by the European Parliament reportedly identified around €4.3 million in potentially irregular expenses, raising questions about compliance with institutional rules.
The investigation focuses on several types of suspected irregularities, including contracts awarded to certain service providers, possible failures to follow proper procurement procedures, and expenses that may have indirectly benefited structures or individuals close to political figures. Authorities are seeking to determine whether these European funds were used exclusively for parliamentary activities or whether they may have contributed to national political operations.
This new case adds to previous legal challenges involving the RN and European public funds. The party has already been involved in the long-running investigation into alleged misuse of European Parliament funds related to parliamentary assistants of the former National Front (Front national), the party’s former name.
The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), which is responsible for investigating crimes affecting the financial interests of the European Union, is also examining this new matter. At this stage, the investigation is still ongoing, and no final judgment has been issued.
For the National Rally, these allegations represent another political challenge as the party continues efforts to strengthen its institutional image and credibility among voters. RN representatives have repeatedly rejected accusations against the party and have argued that some investigations are politically motivated.
The case could become another major episode in the wider European debate over political financing transparency, accountability, and the management of public funds.
As the investigation continues, authorities will now focus on establishing whether any financial rules were breached and whether legal action should follow.
