A powerful heatwave is currently affecting large parts of Europe, bringing exceptional temperatures, health warnings, and major disruptions across several sectors. From the United Kingdom to Spain, France, Italy, and Belgium, many regions are experiencing unusually high temperatures rarely seen for the month of June.
The United Kingdom has recorded one of its hottest June days on record, with temperatures reaching 35.8°C in West Sussex, surpassing the previous June record set in 1976. Authorities have issued extreme heat alerts due to growing risks to public health, transportation systems, and critical infrastructure.
In France, the situation is particularly concerning, with temperatures exceeding 40°C in some areas. Several departments have been placed under the highest heat warning level, while the extreme weather has caused disruptions to transportation, restrictions on certain professional activities, and increased pressure on the electricity network. Some nuclear power facilities have had to reduce production due to rising water temperatures affecting their cooling systems.
The heatwave is linked to an atmospheric phenomenon known as an “Omega block”, a weather pattern that traps hot air over the European continent for several days. This system prevents cooler air from moving in and allows temperatures to continue rising.
The impact is also being felt in daily life. Schools have been forced to close or adjust their schedules, public events have been disrupted, and authorities have opened cooling spaces to protect vulnerable populations, particularly elderly people and individuals with health risks.
Beyond the immediate crisis, experts warn that the intensification of such heat events reflects a broader trend connected to climate change.
