Germany Accuses Russia of a Major Cyberattack and Political Interference

German authorities announced that they have uncovered evidence pointing to Russia’s involvement in a cyberattack targeting the country’s air safety systems, as well as an operation aimed at influencing the electoral process. In response, Berlin summoned the Russian diplomatic representative to formally express its protest.

The Foreign Ministry stated that intelligence services traced the August 2024 cyberattack to the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence agency. Investigators believe the operation was carried out by the hacker group APT28, also known as Fancy Bear, which has been linked to several cyber intrusions abroad.

At the same time, the German government claims to have gathered evidence showing that Russia attempted to disrupt the federal elections held in February 2024. This interference campaign, named “Storm 1516,” allegedly involved the coordinated spread of false information and manipulated content to influence public opinion and destabilize the political environment.

Berlin says it holds strong evidence but is withholding details to protect its intelligence methods. So far, the Russian embassy has not issued any public response to these accusations.

Working with its European partners, Germany now plans to impose targeted retaliatory measures against the individuals and groups implicated. Potential actions include strengthened EU sanctions such as travel bans, asset freezes, and various economic restrictions.

German authorities have been warning for months about an escalation of hybrid actions attributed to Moscow disinformation, espionage, cyberattacks, and attempted sabotage. According to Berlin, these operations aim to weaken democratic institutions, create division within society, and undermine the country’s political stability.
