The Alpine resort of Crans-Montana, located in Switzerland’s Valais canton, was struck by a major tragedy on the night marking the start of 2026. A particularly violent fire broke out in a popular bar in the heart of the resort while numerous guests were celebrating the New Year. The blaze, which erupted at around 1:30 a.m., resulted in a heavy human toll, leaving approximately forty people dead and more than one hundred injured, several of them in critical condition.
According to initial information released by local authorities, the fire spread extremely rapidly inside the establishment, which was crowded at the time of the incident. The presence of highly flammable materials and the layout of the venue are believed to have contributed to the swift spread of flames and smoke, plunging those inside into a state of extreme panic. Witnesses described chaotic scenes, with people attempting to escape by any means possible.
Emergency services were deployed in large numbers within minutes of the outbreak. Firefighters, paramedics and medical teams responded swiftly, supported by helicopters used to evacuate the injured to nearby hospitals. Given the scale of the disaster and the severity of some injuries, particularly serious burns, local hospital capacities were quickly overwhelmed. Transfers to other medical facilities across Switzerland and abroad were organized to ensure specialized treatment for the most critical cases.
Several foreign nationals are among the victims. French authorities confirmed that French citizens were injured in the incident and that some individuals remained unaccounted for at the time of the latest official reports. France also agreed to receive additional injured patients in its hospitals, highlighting cross-border cooperation in response to the tragedy.
The exact cause of the fire has not yet been firmly established. At this stage, investigators are favoring an accidental origin, while efforts continue to determine how the fire started and why it spread so quickly. No criminal hypothesis has been confirmed so far.
The tragedy has triggered a strong emotional response in Switzerland and beyond, as Crans-Montana is a well-known international tourist destination, particularly popular during the winter season. Messages of solidarity and condolences have poured in, while local authorities have set up psychological support services for survivors and the families of the victims. The investigation is ongoing to fully clarify the circumstances of the disaster and to draw lessons aimed at preventing similar tragedies in the future.
